Staff Book Study Spring 2020

I’m excited to announce the titles that I am using for the staff book study I’m leading in my district February – April of this year! I have read both of them and they are AMAZING.

ABOUT THE BOOKS

MAYBE HE JUST LIKES YOU (Barbara Dee) – middle school

For seventh grader Mila, it starts with an unwanted hug on the school blacktop.The next day, it’s another hug. A smirk. Comments. It all feels…weird. According to her friend Zara, Mila is being immature, overreacting. Doesn’t she know what flirting looks like? But it keeps happening, despite Mila’s protests. On the bus, in the halls. Even during band practice-the one time Mila could always escape to her “blue-sky” feeling. It seems like the boys are EVERYWHERE. And it doesn’t feel like flirting–so what is it? Mila starts to gain confidence when she enrolls in karate class. But her friends still don’t understand why Mila is making such a big deal about the boys’ attention. When Mila is finally pushed too far, she realizes she can’t battle this on her own–and finds help in some unexpected places.

HEROINE (Mindy McGinnis) – young adult

When a car crash sidelines Mickey just before softball season, she has to find a way to hold on to her spot as the catcher for a team expected to make a historic tournament run. Behind the plate is the only place she’s ever felt comfortable, and the painkillers she’s been prescribed can help her get there. The pills do more than take away pain; they make her feel good. With a new circle of friends—fellow injured athletes, others with just time to kill—Mickey finds peaceful acceptance, and people with whom words come easily, even if it is just the pills loosening her tongue. But as the pressure to be Mickey Catalan heightens, her need increases, and it becomes less about pain and more about want, something that could send her spiraling out of control.

The HOW of it all

Staff can choose either of these books and we’ll be only having a brief intro meeting at the beginning and wrap-up meeting at the end – all of the discussions are going to be taking place in Google Classroom. My district has a compensation structure that requires teachers to earn PD points, and I’m so happy that my admin has approved this book study as eligible for points – this is definitely leading to higher interest.  There will be a weekly guided discussion as well as supplemental reading / listening material to help relate the topics to our professional lives. I’ll check back in here with a wrap of how it all went, and to share the supplemental resources!
